The PMO made it clear that the government had incurred no expenses on Gandhi’s overseas visits or her medical treatment abroad or in India.
During the last 8 years, it said, only one trip to Belgium undertaken at the invitation of the Belgian government to receive a national honour was paid for by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the total cost of which was less than Rs. 3 lakh.
Citing an RTI reply, Modi in one of his election speeches had claimed that Rs. 1,880 crore was spent on Gandhi’s overseas visits.
However, the RTI applicant refuted the claim, saying the figure quoted by Modi was grossly wrong.
The PMO further clarified that expenses for her security contingent are borne by the Special Protection Group.
