Ranjana Mahat, Sagar’s grandmother, was at CST waiting for a train to Uttar Pradesh. She and Sagar were in the waiting room.
The police said while Mahat was asleep, an unidentified woman, who was sleeping next to Sagar, picked him up and walked away with him. When Mahat woke up, she raised an alarm, following which other commuters told her a woman wearing a red sari had left with the baby.
Mahat, who lives at Naigaon, hawks utensils for a living. The baby was with her after his father had asked Mahat to take care of him as his wife had left him.
Surendranath Deshmukh, senior inspector of CST GRP, said, “The incident came to light around 3.55 am, when Mahat woke up and failed to find the baby. After scanning the station, we registered a case of kidnapping.”
