After remaining closed for six months, the night food street in sector-14 will be back in action on November 15 mainly to cater to the students of Panjab University and the attendants of patients admitted at Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).
Failing to sustain the much-hyped concept adopted on the lines of Gawal Mandi night food street in Lahore, the UT municipal corporation had closed the lone night food street of the city on May 17 this year. The concept was launched with much fanfare in December 2008.

As the renovation work of the night food street would be completed on October 7, the draw of lots for the same would be conducted on November 1. This time, the municipal corporation would charge Rs. 25,000 per month as rent for each kiosk in order to ensure that the prices of the food items remain within reach of the common people.

It would have four kiosks offering Punjabi cuisines, South Indian dishes, bakery items and products of Verka and Vita. This time, the municipal body has avoided offering non-vegetarian food items at the kiosks so as to avoid the unhygienic conditions that had created problem earlier.

This information was provided to the Punjab and Haryana high court on Saturday by the Chandigarh administration during the resumed hearing in a case in which the high court had taken suo motu notice of a news item "Popularity of food street takes a dip as prices soar" which appeared in HT Live on October 2, 2010. The news item had highlighted the shocking condition of the night food street, including the high prices of the food items as well as the poor cleanliness. Since then, the matter has been under the scanner of the high court.
