Kalpesh Joshi, father of three-month-old Aahuti who was allegedly battered to death, claimed that he was unaware of the torture the girl was put through.
In his statement to the police, Joshi said that his wife Dharmishta scolded the toddler and her two-year-old sister on several occasions which, according to him, was normal.

However, the children were never beaten up in his presence. Joshi said had he known that Ahuti had been battered by her mother before the girl was rushed to KEM hospital with injures, he would have reported the matter to the doctors.

Kalpesh confessed that bringing up the two kids was often unnerving, and asked if the older daughter could be sent to their native place in Gujarat.

Police officials are now counting on a version from Kalpesh’s 20-year-old sister, who was also staying with the family in Mumbai, to shed light on the incident.

“She is at their native place in Gujarat and will return in a couple of days, following which we will summon her,” said Shashikant Aahire, inspector with the Borivali police station.

On Thursday, Aahuti’s mother Dharmishta confessed to battering the girl, following which she was arrested on murder charges. Despite Kalpesh’s statement, police are yet to give him a clean chit.

Police have also recorded statement of the doctors who first attended Ahuti after she was rushed to Shivani Medical Centre in Borivali, on September 23, after her family notice she had trouble breathing.

The child was later shifted to KEM Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on October 1.
