The operational head of the multi-crore bank robbery in New Delhi’s Defence Colony, Vijay Singh, changed over a dozen hideouts before being nabbed in Palwal (Haryana) by the Delhi Police on Saturday.
Singh, who is involved in about 27 cases of crime, including murder, kidnapping, robbery
and theft, had a dream to do something big. He wanted to do the last big robbery of his life and settle with his wife outside Delhi forever.
“He was released from jail two years back and has been convicted in three cases. He is also appearing in the court regularly for other pending trial cases. He played an instrumental role in the Defence Colony cash van robbery, starting from the conspiracy till the final distribution of the loot among all,” a senior police officer said.
“Singh, along with the other main accused, Har Kishan, took a fortnight to hatch a near-perfect plan. Singh’s other associates visited his house in Maidangarhi several times. On the day of the robbery, they all had taken anti-depressant pills before the heist. Then they started from IGNOU road, leaving Singh’s car at Khoka Market in Saket and reached near the bank,” the officer added.
After collecting his share of money, Singh took his wife and ailing child and fled to Gurgaon. He gave two major portions of the looted money to his two relatives and then went to Mewat to seek new hideouts.
The interrogation of the other accused led the police to Pawan Kumar, an employee with BSES. The police recovered R10 lakh from his house in Usmanpur and was arrested. With three arrests on Saturday, 10 people have been arrested in this case so far.
Singh told the police that he had got R90 lakh as his share out of which, R86 lakh has already been recovered from his relatives Tek Chand and Krishan Kumar at the time of their arrests.
The rest of the money was spent in an excursion to Haridwar and for spending time at various hideouts in NCR for a week.
