The rising incidence of teenage drinking came to fore this morning when four class 11 students of Gyandeep model senior secondary school in Sector 20 were found in an inebriated state on the campus. Giving details, Sector 19 police station SHO Harjit Kaur said they received a call at the police control room that some boys in the school were consuming liquor. Though no case has been registered in the incident, the matter has been referred to the UT education department.

Police sources said the boys were reportedly sitting on the fence behind the school building and consuming liquor. One of the boys was reportedly celebrating his birthday and had thrown a party for his friends. In fact, the teenager celebrating his birthday had got the liquor.
 
The police control room staff that reached the school on receiving the complaint initially returned empty-handed. Later, the SHO reached the school and checked each class and identified four boys. The boys were sent for a medical examination to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, and it confirmed consumption of liquor by them.

The students were handed over to their parents after a medical examination. The SHO said no case was registered against the boys as they had consumed liquor in the school premises and not in a public place. She said the report was being sent to the Director Public Instructions (Schools) for further action, as schools fall under his purview.

Meanwhile, principal S Deswal refused to comment on the issue, saying no such incident took place in the school.

 

Repeat of April incident

This is not the first case to be reported to the police of teenage drinking. Five class 12 students of a government school were found in an inebriated state in Sector 10 leisure valley in April this year. Three of the girls were high on liquor and were found vomiting. One of the boys had fled from the spot.
