Jaguar Land Rover is preparing for a slew of product launches to shake up the Indian luxury car market. Coming up first is the new Range Rover — an all-aluminum SUV that is 420 kg lighter than the existing version. It will be launched by the end of this year. The JLR India spokesperson said the new Range Rover will be launched in India “before the end of this year”. Jaguar XJL Ultimate, the advanced and spacious version of Jaguar XJ, will be launched by January 2013.

He said Jaguar F-Type, the two-seater sports car, will be in India within a few months after its global commercial launch in mid-2013.

Jaguar is coming up with a two seater sports car — F-Type — after a gap of 50 years. Both Jaguar F-Type and Range Rover were unveiled in the Paris Motor Show.


Among the SUVs, Land Rover’s Freelander Refresh will also come to India in 2013. The company is exploring an entry-level luxury sedan to tap into the volumes segment against the Audi A4, BMW 3-series and Mercedes Benz C Class.

In 2015-16, JLR will launch the production version of the Defender Concept 100 in India.

JLR, the Tata-owned British premium carmaker, grew two and a half times at 2,288 units in 2011-12 to become a significant player in the Indian luxury car space.

Industry watchers expect Indian luxury car sales to skyrocket from 25,000 in 2011 to 150,000 in 2020. Besides JLR, luxury players such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi and Volvo are gearing up to cash in on the growing wealth and aspirations of affluent Indians.

Globally, when most carmakers face tough growth, JLR has had an outstanding 40% growth in January to August this year, mainly driven by Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar XF.

JLR investing £2 billion ( Rs. 16,700 crore) in global expansion, with a thrust on leaner and lighter models.
