It was an audience that may someday boast of having in its midst skilled orators or diplomats. For the students of Sanskriti School, the following three days of rigorous, simulated United Nations sessions at their fourth Model United Nations (MUN) will prove to be a steady platform.

“This endeavour involves students who act as delegates of member states of the United Nations. This educates participants about current events, international relations and the very functioning of the UN, because of which this is an exercise of immense significance,” said Abha Sehgal, principal, Sanskriti School.

The MUN has 20 participating schools, including those from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Shashi Tharoor, a former under-secretary general at the UN and now a member of Parliament, highlighted the history as well as the significance of the organisation.

“The UN is both a stage and an actor. It is a stage for member nations and it is an actor because it carries out what is discussed on that stage,” he said.

The chief guest of the event, Sachin Pilot, discussed changes in information technology as well as the importance of going beyond the obvious media of knowledge to gain wider perspectives of events.
