Panchkula police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the case of theft of Rs.
8.31 lakh from an Axis Bank ATM in Sector 12-A with the arrest of two persons.
The accused in the theft case, which occurred at about 4am on September 30, were identified as
Randhir Singh of Sector 34 in Chandigarh and Rajiv Shukla who have since been sent in police custody for six days by a local court.
How case was cracked
A team led by Sector 14 police station SHO, ACP (under training) Adarshdeep Singh, checked the CCTV footage of previous days at the ATM. It came to light that an attempt to break the ATM was made around 6.30am on September 26 as well. On that day, the accused pasted slips on the CCTV cameras but one of the accused was caught on tape while removing those slips. Police said that sources were then deployed to zero in on the culprit, who was later identified as Randhir Singh.
Sources said that mobile tower locations and a tip-off from the owner of a company where the second accused was working led police to co-accused Rajiv Shukla.
When police went to Randhir's house, his family reportedly said that he had gone with Shukla to pay obeisance at Golden Temple in Amritsar. On October 9, both were brought to Sector 14 police station and arrested.
Police have also seized a Honda City car from Shukla that was used in the crime.
Profile of accused Rajiv Shukla, a graduate, was working as a cash loader with Brinksarya Private Limited and thus aware of the type of ATM placed at Axis Bank outlets. He allegedly gave the idea of theft to Randhir. Randhir later stole Rs. 8,000-Rs 10,000 from an ATM in Dera Bassi by using a gas cutter as well as ATM battery.
Randhir Singh, a Class XII pass, had stayed in the UK for eight years. He was working in an international call centre in Phase IX in SAS Nagar. Both were known to each other since childhood as their families stayed in the same locality in Sector 33 of Chandigarh at one point of time.
Need for money
Randhir Singh was getting a salary of Rs. 9,000 per month and needed more money to support his family. For both accused, ATM theft was an easy way of making money.
