Various mohalla-level committees have been contacting people to elicit support for the bandh. A sub-committee is also mustering public support to press the police to arrest the accused soon and for the bandh.
"We have been assured support by a few political parties, social organisations, NGOs and students. People have become aware of the anti-social elements and want to get them punished. People can tolerate inflation, unemployment and other things, but not their daughters being humiliated and abducted," said Swaran Singh, a joint action committee member.
"We are disappointed that the police have failed to trace the girl even after 17 days. Now we intend to move the high court to demand a CBI inquiry into the case. Instead of providing us some relief, the police released the girl's photographs, showing she was married, which hurt us more," he said.
SSP, DIG transferredAccording to a major reshuffle in the IPS and PPS officers on administrative grounds, Faridkot SSP Gurinder Singh Dhillon has been transferred. Gurpreet Singh Toor has been appointed as the new SSP. The Ferozepur DIG is also reportedly among the transferred officers. Both the police officers were criticised by the protesters for releasing the photographs of the abducted girl. The locals see this as an aftermath of the Shruti abduction case.
