Get your list of what to read, listen, eat and watch from the proven experts in the field‘The Alchemist is as profound as a simple story can be’
Read: Novoneel Chakraborty, Author, A Thing Beyond Forever
about the protagonist Howard Roark during my college years set my mind on a track. The innate fieriness with which the whole individualism versus collectivism issue has been portrayed in the book compels you to even end up defying your worst fears.
The Alchemist Paulo Coelho
The beauty of this book will only be appreciated by those who believe in the magic of the whole celestial make-up and in the fact that it has the power to affect us. Objectively speaking, it’s as simple as a story can get and subjectively, it’s as profound as a simple story can become.
It Rained All Night Buddhadeva Bose
What struck me about this particular work was the ease with which the author was ‘mind-swapping’ between the protagonists. Thereby, extorting out the intricacies of an age-old institution called marriage from both the wife and the husband’s perspective.
The Bridges of Madison County Robert James Waller
One of the most mature love stories I’ve come across. The kind of sacrifice from both the woman and man hooked me and followed me for a long time even after I finished reading the book. A must-read by all romance genre fans.
Shantaram Gregory David Roberts
It made me discover a lot about my own country, its inhabitants and about myself. If one has a thing for descriptive passages, philosophy and interesting and edgy characters, then this is the book to read.

‘Tum pukar lo is a beautiful haunting melody’
Listen: Arko Pravo Mukherjee, Music director
Tum pukaar lo Khamoshi
It’s a beautiful haunting melody which is everlasting and forever touches me deeply. Only Hemant Kumar’s voice could have done justice to this rare and classic masterpiece of a melody.
Hai apna dil to awara Solva Saal
This song is the emblem of free-spirited abandon, something that reminds me of endless roads, nature, love and pure joy.
Naina barase rimjhim rimjhim Woh Kaun Thi?
It’s my favourite Lata Mangeshkar song and my favourite composition of the master that Madan Mohan was. Its simplicity makes its beauty more profound. The yearning and the subtle self-indulgence in yearning reflects
beautifully in this song.
Tu hi re Bombay
This is my favourite love song. After all, what is a love story, if not torn and tested by time and circumstances? This song has the modern genius A R Rahman at his heart-wrenching best.
Pag ghungroo baandh Namak Halaal
This song is so hilarious and so amazing. I’ve never heard a song as much fun as this one, even the lyrics are absolutely hilarious. There is so much happening in the arrangement, but it traverses seamlessly and casually.

‘Woodside Inn is the perfect place for an after-work beer’
Eat: Ravi Gurnani, Director, York Winery
Woodside Inn Colaba
This is the perfect place for your after-work beer. It has a good selection of international beers at good prices. Plus, the heritage building setting in Colaba adds to the charm of the place.
No matter your choice in music, there will be a gig for you here pretty much every Friday. The terrace setting makes for a great combination of music and beer.
Pali Village Cafe Bandra
This place is pretty nondescript looking from the outside, but quite a contrast inside. The raw and rustic ambience reminds you of sitting in a rural Italian cafe and sipping some wine.
Out of the Blue Powai
This place is very approachable and unpretentious. The buffets are also good value for your money. There’s always something going on here quite literally, whether it’s a wine tasting session, stand-up comedy act or even a spa brunch!
This place has a more contemporary setting compared to the Colaba restaurant. It’s a perfect place for a meal at any time of the day. The grilled rawas is to die for and extra points for the selection of music they play.
‘Duma teaches us the power and importance of family’
Watch: Mahesh Shetty, Actor
The Godfather Part II 1974
This film has by far been the finest movie sequel I have ever seen. I loved the role of Michael Corleone played by actor Al Pacino. One of my favourite dialogues in the film is: ‘There are many things my father taught me here in this room. He taught me: keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.’
Scar face 1983
The film has a story that can touch you with its riches as it touched the protagonist Tony Montana. It reminds me of the fact that while crime doesn’t pay, it can still make you rich.
It is an enchanting drama-adventure film that teaches us the power and importance of family. I just loved the cheetah Duma’s loyalty and faithfulness in the film.
Paan Singh Tomar 2012
Actor Irrfan as Paan Singh Tomar typifies that criminal neglect of all athletes in our country, barring cricketers, who as we all know by now, are grossly overrated sportspersons.
Actor Ranbir Kapoor does an extraordinary job in this film. His acting is excellent and it wouldn’t be incorrect to say that he lived the role of Janardhan/Jordan wholeheartedly.
