In an age when cosmetic surgeries are common, yet are often looked down upon as ‘fake’ beauty, skin expert and author Professor Torello Lotti says there’s nothing wrong with going under the knife to enhance one’s features. “To look good is important, so it’s perfectly fine to get treated. There’s
really nothing to be ashamed of,” says Lotti, a hair and skin consultant for many Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities. He however adds that he certainly has an objection about being ‘obsessed’ about beauty. “There are people who undergo laser surgery 40 times and those individuals should be checked from psychological disorders. Such people are never happy with their image so a doctor should guide them. That’s also one reason we don’t immediately start the treatment of whoever is asking for it. This is the ethical aspect of our profession.”
The right age for makeovers
While on one hand there are people who want to go for multiple cosmetic implants repeatedly, on the other hand there are teenagers who seem to have discovered an easy shortcut in them to look beautiful. This could be harmful, feels Lotti, who, apart from being an expert on vitiligo, is also a member of the scientific committee of Direct Hair Implant. “This is a mistake, and education is needed to guide teenagers to not go for such treatments at such tender age, unless there is a medical disorder and a treatment is required,” he says, adding, “Botox has also been found to have an impact on the brain. We are yet to know the exact effects that it may have in the long term, but I think it is not safe to start botox implants at a very young age because the accumulation of this toxin in the nervous system might harm the brain.”
Busting skin care myths
The water myth: You need not drink two litres of water every day to keep your skin hydrated all the time. Hydration of the skin has to do with the component of the skin and the production of ceramine, and this is independent of what and how much you are eating or drinking.
Expensive is always the best: No, it’s not. Using expensive skincare products may not be the sure shot way to get a flawless skin. Different skin types require different types of cosmetics so what’s important is the
composition of the product must be suitable for your skin type.
Wash your face every few hours: Not really. The skin has a film which protects from radiation and different types of bacterial or viral infection. If you wash your skin too much you might end up removing this protective film.
Anti-ageing products can instantly make you look younger: Firstly, there’s no need to start using anti-aging stuff before you actually require them. Also, these products don’t have magic so cannot really make your skin look younger overnight or after a certain point of time. Research shows that the skin undergoes a constant change throughout our lives so let your skin age normally and gracefully.
