The winning prospects of the Congress candidate from Una, Satpal Raizada, got a jolt as the block Congress committee, led by its president Nishan Singh, on Sunday pledged its support to Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate OP Rattan.
Addressing the mediapersons here, OP Rattan announced
that he accepted the offer of the Trinamool Congress to become its candidate from Una.
He said that he has sent in his resignation to the state Congress leadership from the post of PCC member from Una, state party spokesman and also from the primary membership of the party. Incidentally, Rattan has been a Virbhadra antagonist throughout his political career.
Justifying the reasons for quitting the Congress party, of which he had been a member in the state assembly from 1993 to 1998, Rattan said his claim on the party ticket had been ignored in 2003 and 2007 assembly elections.
Opposing the allocation of Congress ticket to young turk Satpal Raizada, Rattan said he had witnessed how the ticket allocation process in the Congress was managed and manipulated, adding that people were losing faith in the national party.
Rattan said all through the two decades of his political career, he had believed in honesty and transparency in public life. "My ideology is the ideology of the common man," he said.
He added that Trinamool Congress supremo Mamta Banerjee was an aggressive leader who threw out the communist party, entrenched in West Bangal for three and a half decades.
He said the party would give a decisive third option to the people of the state during the coming elections.
Cong media in-charge accused of manipulating ticket allocation
Former block Congress president Nishan Singh, who joined the Trinamool Congress, on Sunday charged that Haroli MLA and state Congress media in-charge Mukesh Agnihotri had sabotaged the Congress tickets in the district.
He alleged that Agnihotri had manipulated to ensure that senior Congress leaders were denied tickets on the five seats in Una district and the tickets were allocated to young and inexperienced persons so that he remained the undisputed party leader in the district and, therefore, the only candidate for a ministerial berth in case the Congress return to power. He, however, said the TMC will vehemently oppose Mukesh Agnihotri in his constituency.
