A burglar made an attempt to break open the safe of a State Bank of India branch in Government College for Men, Sector 11, early on Sunday morning. The locks of the main shutter and the gate inside were found broken by policemen on beat duty.
Sector 11 SHO Gurmukh Singh said, "The locker and safe were intact and nothing was stolen from the bank. We have gone through the CCTV footage. The locks were broken by one person at about 4.15 am. The person was wearing a T-shirt. We hope to nab him soon."

Police sources said the person did not appear to be a professional criminal as he did not even cover his face and had no gadgets to open the lock.

A case of theft and house trespass has been registered on a complaint by branch manager Rajinder Kaur. College principal JS Raghu said, "I condemn the incident and will find out if any student of the college was involved in it. We have asked the police for the CCTV footage and will try to ascertain the identity of the accused. Security on the college premises has been beefed up."
