A third year student of Punjab Engineering College (PEC) residing in Panchkula, who had met with a road accident on the PEC premises on October 11, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday. The victim, Charu Mehta (21), was staying in hostel and was a student of production engineering.
was hit by an Alto car (CH-01AD-1711) while she was going to have lunch in the hostel mess.
The accused, Vishal, is a first year student of PEC. He was arrested on Sunday morning and later released on bail. He was booked for causing death due to negligent driving under section 304A of the IPC. Vishal was driving his friend's car. Charu's family claimed that he was driving recklessly at high speed.
Sector 11 police station SHO Gurmukh Singh said Charu was walking down the road near Arawali hostel in PEC with her friend when the car hit her from behind. He said the car dragged Charu up to a distance of a few metres. She suffered an abdominal injury after she was hit by a sharp object on the road.
Charu was immediately rushed to the PGI with the help of passersby.
Charu's father Ajay Mehta, who was in tears, said, "The accident occurred at about 1.15 pm and we rushed to the PGI after getting a call from Charu's friend. She got proper treatment at the hospital, but some complication in the lungs resulted in her death."
Calling Charu a meritorious student, Mehta said, "My daughter had won several trophies in science declamation and she wanted to become an IAS officer. I had never imagined she would meet such a death."
Mehta is a manager at a State Bank of Patiala branch in Patiala, while her mother Arun Mehta is working with Bharat Electronics. Charu's younger brother is a Class 12 student in a Panchkula school.
Talking to mediapersons, Charu's uncle Sanjay said, "Exemplary punishment should be awarded to people causing road accidents due to rash driving. Even after being booked for his involvement in a fatal accident, the accused managed to get bail. We should have some effective deterrent in place to check road accidents."
A pall of gloom descended on Charu's residence with relatives and friends trying to comfort the distraught parents. Charu's mother was inconsolable. She was sure that her daughter would survive.
