Veteran Hindi filmmaker Yash Chopra died of multi-organ failure on Sunday, a week after he was admitted to the Lilavati hospital with dengue. The funeral will take place today in Mumbai.
Chopra, who celebrated his 80th birthday on September 27, changed the face of romance in Hindi
cinema to become a brand in Bollywood, with hits such as Kabhie Kabhie, Silsila, Chandni and Dil to Pagal Hai in his five-decade long illustrious career.
Born on September 27, 1932 in Lahore, Chopra also thrilled fans with action dramas such a Trishul and Deewar, which established Amitabh Bachchan as the “angry young man”.
Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan — scheduled for Diwali release — would be his last film as a director, Chopra had said during his birthday celebrations.
Wife Pamela and sons Aditya and Uday survive Chopra. Aditya is a successful director. Uday tried his hand at films but failed to make a mark.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described Chopra as an “icon of Indian cinema” who entertained many generations with his rare creativity.
"I send heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire film fraternity at this loss. He established the popularity of Indian cinema internationally and was honoured by many governments. He will be remembered by millions. He had an aesthetic talent to make his films look larger than life. His flourish to essay romance and social drama was unmatched," the Prime Minister posted on his official Twitter account.
Message from Yash Raj Films
"Yash Chopraji breathed his last at around 5.30 pm today. Details of his last rites will be communicated later."
