Deputy commissioner of police (zone 5) Dhananjay Kulkarni said that they will be conducting an inquiry into the matter, before considering the next course of action.
When asked about the exact readings, Unawne said, "While the permissible limit in the area is 45 decibels, on certain occasions during the rally, the noise level fluctuated between 65 and 105 decibels. This was in clear violation of the rules."
According to readings by Sumaira Abdulali, convener of anti-noise pollution NGO Awaaz Foundation, the highest reading was recorded at 88 decibels. When questioned about the discrepancy, Unawne said, "The place from where you measure also matters. We have registered the complaint on the basis of the readings we got."
The Bombay high court had given conditional permission to the organizers for the Dusshera rally at Shivaji Park. The court had asked them to abide by noise pollution rules.
Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai said the party had taken all required steps to ensure noise levels were in control. "We had a distributed audio system, and had also put up noise-absorbing partitions. Residents staying around the park also did not complain."
