Having lost faith in the cops, the people of Bally, Howrah, took it upon themselves to catch three criminals involved in snatching a gold necklace from a local homemaker on Sunday. The victim, Anima Dhar, was walking near Bally khal when a youth snatched her necklace.
“The culprit called
out to her, as Didi, and when she turned and went to him, he immediately snatched the necklace and ran away,” said an officer at the Bally police station. “The officer-in-charge of the local police station is guided by Trinamool Congress leaders; because of this he does not think to do his work properly. As a result, snatchings and other crimes are increasing everyday,” alleged a resident of Bally, on the condition of anonymity.
Deepak Sarkar, the officerin-charge refused to comment, saying, “My superiors will tell of my functions.” HT tried to contact the superior officers of Howrah commissionarate but no one picked up the phone.
“Our chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee clearly said that under no circumstances should there be any interference in police activities, and if we receive any complaints that the officer-in-charge concerned is paying more attention to Trinamool leaders and failing to control crime in his area we will ask the commissioner to remove him,” Arup Roy, Howrah district president of Trinamool Congress and state agriculture minister, told HT on Sunday.
After the theft of her necklace, Dhar had shouted for help and her fellow walkers quickly rushed to her aid. However, by the time, the criminal had managed to make his getaway.
A clue came from a boy who works at a tea vendor’s stall and watched the whole incident play out, before the shop opened. Some time later, three men came to threaten the boy.
On receiving this news, locals rushed to the spot and, on the information provided by the boy, caught all three of them, including the thief, from a slum near the Ballyghat railway station.
Finally, the police were informed and the criminals handed over to them. In another similar case, a snatcher was caught from the Narkeldanga police station area.
Puman Pal, homemaker, was traveling by taxi, along with her husband. Near the Maniktala Bridge, where the car stopped at a traffic signal, a youth snatched Pal’s necklace through the car window.
The victim shouted for help and the locals caught the thief and handed him over to the police.
