Himself facing corruption allegations, former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa believes that "leveling of corruption charges against anyone and everyone" is a "worrying" trend in Indian democracy.

While not commenting on whether BJP president Nitin Gadkari should step down after graft charges against him, Yeddyurappa told HT in an interview that he shouldn't have been asked to step down as CM. He added that one standard should be used for all.

Do you feel let down that while the BJP asked you to go, it is defending Nitin Gadkari?
Yes, I, as a person instrumental in bringing the party, against all odds, to power for the first time in South India, was badly let down. I don't want to take names, but insist that there should be one standard towards all in a political party.

Do you think Gadkari should step down in keeping with the precedent set by you?
No comments. I have already said that removing me itself was wrong.

Is your decision to form your own political party final?
Yes, the decision is final. December 10 is the day on which the new party is scheduled to be launched.

What will your party's stand on political corruption be?
Our party will take an unequivocal stand against corruption. But leveling corruption charges against anyone and everyone who matters in public life is becoming the order of the day and worrying for the democratic fabric of the country.

Will you be open to alliances with the UPA or NDA in Karnataka or at the central level, or prefer to go it alone?
We will cross the bridge when we come to it.
