Somdev Devvarman struggled past Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel in three sets to progress to the singles quarter-finals of the ATP Challenger tournament, Charlottesville. The Indian recorded a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over his opponent in the second round of the $ 75,000 hard court tournament.

Somdev, a wild card entrant, next faces American eighth-seed Denis Kudla. He had lost six consecutive first round matches before coming into this event.

The Indian has slid to 733 in the singles ATP rankings.

Pune: Davis Cupper Saketh Myneni will meet Prakash Amrit-raj in the final of the $15,000 Solaris ITF Men’s Future Tennis Championships. In the semis, fourth-seeded Myneni upset top seed Christopher Rungkat (Indo-nesia) 6-2, 6-1. Amritraj beat Nicol-as Reissig (Austria) 6-3, 6-4.
