A couple has been arrested for their alleged involvement in committing thefts in AC coaches of trains. The couple, Moni Singh alias Yasmeen and Mohammad Naushad aka Ahmed Raza, were arrested by the crime and railways police from New Delhi railway station on November 1, said police. Singh holds a double MA in Hindi and Sanskrit while Naushad is illiterate and belongs to a poor family from Bihar’s Kishanganj. They were arrested in connection with a theft in the second class AC coach of Pooja Express on October 30. A handbag of a passenger, containing jewellery and valuables worth Rs. 8 lakh, was stolen.

Sanjay Bhatia, additional DCP (railways) said the couple was arrested following investigation into a complaint lodged by Gurgaon-resident Sneha Ajmera. During investigation, the PNRs of co-passenger travelling in the same coach on the same day were verified and their credentials checked.

“It was observed that a tatkal ticket was brought through internet in Shastri Park by an agent, Ravi. He said the ticket was bought for Ahmed Raza. It was revealed that Ahmed had purchased 28 tickets in last three months,” said Bhatia.

Ahmed was a frequent traveller in AC coaches to various destinations. “A woman travelled with him in the name of Parveen or Yasmeen,” said Bhatia.
