This is the second such incident on the camopus in less than a month. Previously too, a student had been admitted to the Government Rajindra Hospital with wounds in his head, after a mob of students barged into his hostel room and attacked him with swords and daggers.
This clash was the result of an argument between two groups of the students at a cultural festival underway at the institute some time back.
The injured student, who does not wish to be named, told HT that he was a member of the discipline committee at a cultural festival organised last month. He had intervened when he found a group of students creating nuisance in an inebriated condition.
He said that he thought that the matter had ended there, but he was called to the campus on Tuesday for a compromise, but was attacked by a group of 50-6- students.
Punjab university security officer Gurtej Singh said that he had not found any weapon in the university campus. He was evasive and said that the whole incident was a minor scuffle, which had been resolved later.
Urban Estate police station assistant sub-inspector Manmohan Singh said that a DDR had been lodged against all the accused, but an FIR had not been lodged as they were still waiting for the X-Ray report of the injured student.
