Kaur, who runs a small boutique with her husband, received the bill for over Rs. 2 crore for the duration of December 2011 to July 2012 with Wednesday as the last date for payment.
She immediately wrote to the local DJB office at Subhash Nagar, informing them about the mistake.
“The DJB officials promptly got into action. They brought a meter reader with them,” she said. The DJB rectified the problem immediately and corrected the amount to Rs. 4,900, billing her on a flat rate.
DJB officials claimed the system to get bills corrected had improved of late.
Kaur said, “This news was splashed by a local television channel. It must be the media pressure that prompted them to take corrective measure so soon.”
A DJB official said, “The meter was defective and it had started moving in a reverse direction. But now we have given her a revised bill based on previous consumption and have charged a flat rate.”
