To spread the message of Diwali without firecrackers, students of Government High School, Banera village, near Sangrur organised an awareness rally in the village. The rally highlighted the harm that burning of crackers caused to the environment.
The students also distributed special posters among villagers, spreading the message of a pollution-free Diwali.

School principal Budh Ram said that that burning of crackers on Diwali was a wastage of money and resources, besides resulting in pollution.

The school also organised essay writing and poster-making competitions on the theme of 'Pollution-free Diwali'.

The NGO Udaan, also a part of the drive, said that besides harming the environment, pollution from crackers also caused many health hazards, especially among children and the elderly.
