BJP senior leader and former party president M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday launched a frontal attack against the Union government for its attempts to undermine the institution of Constitutional body like the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and said these would only boomerang on the Congress
Addressing the media in Chennai, Naidu condemned the government and Congress leaders attacks against the CAG and said :scams won’t go away by painting the CAG black," and asserted that these attempts would have an effect on the Congress itself, like they had in the past.
The Congress always tries to weaken the institutions and tries to appoint pliant men to posts to undermine the institutions. Citing an example Naidu said the Congress had posted its supporters as election commissioners and before that superseded Supreme Court judges, when some judges were inconvenient.
The Congress and the UPA government is taking on whoever is not pliable, Naidu alleged and warned the Congress that its attempts would boomerang badly on it only.
The government attempts to make the CAG into a multi-member body is a move aimed at undermining the authority of the CAG, he alleged.
Starting from the prime minister to Congress functionaries now want to run down the CAG after its findings embarrassed the government on 2G, Coalblock allotments, Commonwealth games and the like. Which is why you have the minister of state in PMO saying that the government was actively considering making the CAG into a multimember body.
The minister has denied it, but the agency concerned has come out with specific questions and answers, Naidu said condemning the central government proposal to weaken the institution of CAG.
On the RSS leader Vaidya’s observations that MOdi was behind the campaign against Gadkari, Naidu said that he would not be able to comment on the matter. “I will not comment on intra-party affairs in public, having been a past president of the party.”
To another question on the same subject, he said, “this is totally wrong. I don’t know where he got this information. “ Vaidya had alleged in his blog that Modi could be the insider in BJP who was behind the anti Gadkari campaign.
