Two rape cases were reported in Sangrur district in the past two days.


In the first case, the victim is a 16-year-old housemaid who had been impregnated and delivered a stillborn six months after a friend from Moga raped her with the promise of marriage.

Investigation officer Gurmail Singh said that according to the minor victim, she had come in contact with the accused Sandeep Singh, a resident of Chupkiti village in Moga district, at the Sangrur bus stand around six months ago. Making false promises of marrying her, Sandeep had sexual intercourse with her.

She realised she was pregnant when she experienced stomach pain on November 10. Her parents took her to the local civil hospital where she delivered a female stillborn. The hospital authorities informed the police who have registered a case under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). "The stillborn's DNA report is awaited, after which we will arrest the accused," said IO Gurmail.

In the other case, Sunil Kumar and Jiwan Singh of Harchandpur village near Dhuri, 15km from here, have been booked on the charges of having raped a married woman 20 days ago. Investigation officer Gurdev Singh said, "The men allegedly took the woman to sugarcane fields when she was working in another field nearby, and committed the crime. According to her, they also took her naked photographs and distributed these among the villagers." The accused remain at large.
