On Thursday, the day of Bhai Phonta, a 14-year-old girl went missing at 4:30 pm. Her body was discovered at an abandoned well near Panuria jungle, which falls under the jurisdiction of Baraboni in Asansol, Burdwan.
The incident sparked tension in the area, with locals and
family members preventing police from recovering the victim’s body and demanding that they arrest the perpetrators of the brutal killing immediately.
14-year-old Boisakhi Majhi of Panuria was a Class 10 student. Dipali, her mother, said that around 4.30 pm one of Boisakhi’s classmates Ria Majhi called the girl out and she never returned after that.
The victim’s relatives rushed to Ria’s house to ask about the girl’s whereabouts, but were told that Boisakhi had left hours ago. The relatives allegedly found one of the victim’s shoes outside the door to Ria’s home and suspected something was amiss.
Frantic, the family spread their search further afield, looking in every possible location, but to no avail. After that Boisakhi’s parents informed cops at the Baraboni police station and filed a missing persons case on Thursday night.
On Friday morning, villagers found a body floating in a local well. As news spread a number of residents gathers and the body was ultimately identified as Boisakhi’s.
On receiving the information, the victim’s parents also rushed to the spot. Cops also arrived to recover the body, but angry villages thwarted them, demanding the immediate arrest of Ria and her associated. Since then, Ria and two others have reportedly been absconding.
After managing to convince them that the matter would be looked into serious, cops were finally allowed to recover the body and send it for a post mortem examination. The victim’s family lodged an FIR against three people, including Ria.
Additional police commissioner, Asansol-Durgapur, Subrata Ganguli told HT, “We received a complaint from the victim’s family. We are waiting for a post mortem report to determine whether it was an accident or if she was pushed.”
