The Irish government must revisit its regressive anti-abortion law
This refers to the report After outrage, Ireland orders probe into Savita's death (November 16). The tragic death of dentist Savita Halappanavar in Ireland is shameful. It is appalling that the doctors
concerned in the case let religious beliefs take precedence over the Hippocratic Oath. The Irish anti-abortion laws seem to be out of touch with reality. An estimated 4,000 Irish women travel Britain every year, where abortion is legal since 1967. It is high time that the government of Ireland revisits the laws and at least resolves the confusion that prevails regarding them at present.

Modi lacks a pan-India appeal
This refers to Rajdeep Sardesai's article Advantage Modi (Beyond The Bite, November 16). There's no doubt that Narendra Modi will win a third successive term in Gujarat. However, his prime ministerial aspirations may not be realised because he lacks a pan-India appeal. There are many who say that people will forgive and forget Modi only if he apologises for the 2002 riots. But I don't think that will happen. Moreover, he has enough enemies within the BJP to spoil his chances in the general elections.

Reach out to Myanmar
This refers to the editorial Terms of engagement (November 16). New Delhi should make the best out of Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's visit to India. At a time when China is trying to weaken India's relations with its neighbours, New Delhi must enhance its strategic ties with Myanmar, which is seen as India's gateway to the East and a transit country for trade and economic exchanges with southern China. One cannot ignore China's every-growing influence in Nepal and thus New Delhi must not lose any opportunity to increase its political and economic clout, at least in South Asia.
