At six degrees below normal, Mumbai woke up to a chilly Monday morning with the minimum temperature in the suburbs dipping to 14.6 degrees Celsius — the coldest day so far this year. The chill is likely to continue for the next two days.

Even the minimum temperature recorded in south Mumbai was two degrees below normal at 21 degrees Celsius. Daytime temperatures dropped too with winds getting cooler.

This is the lowest temperature in November since 2007 when the barometer dropped to 14.4 degrees Celsius.   

“For the past two days, a western disturbance has been passing over the northern part of the country in Jammu and Kashmir. As a result, strong, cold and dry northerly winds have moved towards southern India and prevailed over Mumbai, which has brought down temperatures in the city,” said NY Apte, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The first dip in temperatures this month was seen on Sunday at 15.2 degree Celsius.

“It’s only November but it has gotten cold suddenly, which is quite unusual for Mumbai,” said Pranav Prashanth, a Class 10 student from Colaba. “It’s chilly, especially in the mornings, but I won't wear a sweater to school because my friends will tease me.
