“A lot of weddings are scheduled for November 29, November 30, December 7 and December 8 for which delivery of ornaments was supposed to take place late last week,” said a jeweller from Zaveri Bazaar.
He added that on Monday, Zaveri Bazaar remained closed following an announcement by the jewellers’ association to keep shutters down as a mark of respect to Thackeray. However, jewellery shops in a few other parts and suburbs remained open.
Kumar Jain, vice president, Mumbai Jewellers’ Association confirmed that deliveries of a large amount of jewellery had got stuck. He said that although stores in Zaveri Bazar were shut on Monday, deliveries were made to those who required the ornaments urgently.
“I have to attend a wedding on November 29 and am struggling to get ornaments that I need to gift the couple,” said Mohanlal Lakhara, a south Mumbai resident.
Zaveri Bazaar on an average sells jewellery worth Rs. 60 crore - Rs. 70 crore every day during the wedding season.
