Modi was accompanied by state BJP leader Vinod Tawde, and expressed grief over Thackeray’s death.
Modi who is currently leading his party for assembly elections in Gujarat could not make it for Thackeray’s funeral on Sunday as he was campaigning across Gujarat.
According to Sena leaders, Uddhav told them that Modi’s visit was expected as Thackeray was one of his biggest supporters. “When all of BJP was gunning for Modi after the riots, it was Balasaheb who was steadfast in his support ,”said Uddhav to close aides.
Modi arrival, along with his convoy of 15 cars also jammed the cellphone network at Kalanagar.
Modi is also said to have spoken to Uddhav’s estranged cousin Raj Thackeray on the telephone and offered condolences to him as well.
