Despite claiming to have stumbled upon vital clues, the Amritsar police failed have failed to crack the murder case of 10-year-old Gurkirat, five days after recovering the child's body.
Gurkirat was kidnapped on November 7 and his body was recovered metres away from his house on
The police have been rounding up people of the area since the day of the kidnapping; continuing its action, two more people were picked up for questioning on Tuesday. Over the past two weeks, more than a dozen people have been questioned and many of them have been let off.
On Tuesday, ADCP (crime), HS Brar, said: "Questioning is on. We are trying our best. We will inform you as soon as something positive comes out."
Sources claimed that the police was keeping a close eye in the Verka area and was also exploring various angles to crack the murder mystery.
Residents had alleged that the police did not take the kidnapping complaint seriously on the first day itself, which led to the case spiraling out of control, leading to the murder of Gurkirat.
Taking note of the complaint, the Amritsar police suspended Verka station house officer Tarlok Singh.
Sources said that a special team had been set up to gather clues to crack the abduction and murder.
On November 16, when the body of the boy was recovered, the family and the area residents had imposed a 48-hour deadline for the police to crack the case and come up with tangible results.
When contacted, Angrej Singh, father of Gurkirat, said: "When the dead body was recovered, we expected the police to crack the case in 48 hours. Now, more than five days have passed. The police is yet to tell me anything about the murderers of my son. We will be meeting the police officers tomorrow."
The medical report of the Gurkirat has indicated that he received an injury in the head.
With the abduction and consequent killing of Gurkirat, the toll of kids kidnapped and murdered in Amritsar has touched three in the past few months. A case of kidnapping and murder of a child was also reported from Tarn Taran.
