Family members of the victims and people of the area had sat on a dharna the whole day on Monday to get this demand fulfilled. The leaders of the stir, however, threatened to resume agitation if the accused was not arrested soon.
Tension prevailed in Gobindpur Khun Khun village on Tuesday when bodies of both the accident victims, Sunita and Anuradha were jointly consigned to flames. MP Santosh Chowdhary, SAD(Amritsar) leaders Gurdip Singh Khun Khun and Avtar Singh Khakh, Bahujan Samaj Party leader Samitter Singh Sikri, who led the agitation from the front, deputy commissioner Deepinder Singh, SSP Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill and thousands of others attended the last rites. Heavy security had been deployed to avoid any untoward incident. Contrary to what happened on Monday, there was no slogan shouting. The leaders demanded a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to each of the bereaved families and Rs. 5 lakh to the kin of the injured, girl who is undergoing treatment in a private hospital. The DC assured the families all possible help.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that Josh had sought the intervention of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in this matter and met him in Garhshankar on Monday, but her request was turned down. He reportedly said the party was already facing embarrassment due to the incident.
When she persisted, Sukhbir admonished her and asked her to leave, claimed sources. Josh had earlier tried to appease the aggrieved families by offering compensation, but when they turned down the offer, she had threatened of not letting them get the post-mortem done.
