It has the capacity to carry up to 800 cusecs of water. According to irrigation department officials, about 30 cusecs of water is being released in the 71-km channel from the Western Yamuna canal in Sonepat.
The flow of water can be enhanced later on.
The NCR channel would help in supplying adequate quantity of water for the growing population of the Millennium City, a government spokesperson said.
About 600 cusecs of water from the NCR channel will be for Gurgaon and IMT Manesar and a certain quantity of the resource will be used by townships proposed to be developed at Bahadurgarh, Sampla, Badli and Kharkhoda.
The construction of the NCR channel had started in September 2008.
At present, the city's need of drinking water is met by the Gurgaon water supply channel and partly from tubewells.
Augmentation planThe government has made a comprehensive plan to augment water supply system in the city. A big water work will be constructed in village Chandu Budhera which is proposed to be of 132 MGD capacity with 6 units.
The Huda will build a new water pumping station at the cost of nearly Rs. 3.5 crores at its Basai water treatment plant.
A Huda official said that the new pumping station will have the capacity of boosting 10 MGD (million gallons per day) of water.
Of the 170 cusecs of water that the Basai treatment plant get from the Gurgaon Water Channel, only about 100 cusecs are used and the rest is wasted.
