Last year, the Maharashtra government had announced, in keeping with University Grant Commission (UGC) rules, that the retirement age of teachers at all state universities be raised to 62 years and 65 years for principals.
In August, the UGC issued a circular saying that states need not follow their retirement rule in order to receive central funding. De-linking of grants from the retirement age, has given states the freedom to decide their own policy.
The proposal, however, has not recommended a rollback in the retirement age for principals. “There is a dearth of qualified principals,” said the official.
“Such a proposal would have to go through the higher education department and then to the cabinet,” said DP Sawant, minister of state for higher and technical education.
