With encroachments in the city going out of control, the municipal corporation has now decided to take stringent steps against violators. The MC will lodge complaints against encroachers with the police to deter them from doing the same in the future.
Under the anti-encroachment drive
going on in the city for since long, the MC did not see any fruitful results.
"One day we used to seize rehris and other material encroaching upon the government land and the other day they again used to encroach upon the land. This had caused a problem and after deliberations it was decided to lodge a written complaint with the police against these encroachers," said Naveen Malhotra, superintendent of the tehbazari wing.
The drive against encroachments in different areas of the city started nearly two months ago on the orders of MC commissioner RK Verma. He personally visited several areas of the city and was surprised to see the situation of encroachments. In every nook and corner of the city, rehris and shopkeepers had encroached upon the government land.
Malhotra said now the MC was taking two steps to stop encroachments. "Firstly, we are videotaping the encroachments so that we have the proof and secondly, we are filing a written complaint against encroachers to deter them from doing the same again and again."
Interestingly, the anti-encroachment team of the MC went to the Jawahar Nagar camp on Monday to clear encroachments. The team was amazed to see that the same encroachments had come up again on Tuesday.
Even mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria went along with the team of the MC and headed the drive.
Though the mayor accompanied the team in areas like Jawahar Nagar camp, he and the civic body team rarely visited areas inside the old city to clear encroachments.
Meanwhile, the message is clear and unequivocal from the MC, "anti-encroachment drive would continue till the menace ends", Malhotra said.
The MC team late on Wednesday started an anti-encroachment drive on the Pakkhowal road. The mayor headed the drive and around 10 rehris were seized.
