A 30-year-old woman died in Siliguri on Wednesday evening after her husband allegedly set her on fire in cold blood. The man, who is seriously injured after locals beat him up, has been arrested.   40-year-old Avijit Paul, a businessman, had married Kalyani Paul seven months ago. However, he had concealed the fact that he had married earlier, effectively committing bigamy. Trouble started after Kalyani learnt the truth and Avijit started torturing her on regular basis.

On Wednesday evening, the landlord of the building that Avijit and Kalyani inhabited saw flames emanating from the house and informed the fire brigade. Fire brigade personnel later discovered Kalyani’s charred body. Agitated locals beat up Avijit and he was admitted in Siliguri Sadar Hospital.

Locals and Kalyani’s family members alleged that Avijit had set her on fire after pouring kerosene over her. He is currently in police custody.
