Home minister RR Patil on Friday assured action against police officials who arrested two women from Palghar over their Facebook comments. "We will take action as per the recommendations of the report," Patil said in Pune. Following the public outrage triggered by the arrests, the state had ordered an inquiry into the police action. The inquiry report was submitted on Friday.

The report, submitted to the director general of police (DGP) Sanjeev Dayal's office on Friday, was sent to the government by night, states that the police slapped unjustified charges on the two youngsters.

The report is said to have stated that the arrests were made despite orders from senior officers against such action.

"We will study the report and the recommendations made by Sukhwant Singh, inspector general of police, Konkan range, and then decide what action to take. We will consider dropping the charges against the girls," said a senior government official, requesting anonymity.

Patil said there is a need for clarity in laws concerning the social media, the internet and mobile phones.

"There has been demand for freedom and restriction on rights," he said.
