A 52-year-old man was charred to death after his car caught fire in Rohini area of outer Delhi on Friday night. Police said that though there was no central locking system in the car, the victim was unable to get out in time.
“Ved Prakash, a driver with the erstwhile MCD, was returning home in his Maruti 800. As soon as he reached sector 7, Rohini, the car caught fire. By the time he stopped the car and came out, it was too late. Local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead with 80% burns,” said a senior police officer.

Police said Prakash had gone to meet a relative in Rohini Sector 2. “At 8pm, he was returning home when there was a short circuit in the car. Without realising. he kept on driving. Within seconds, the car was engulfed in fire,” the officer added.

The car doors were jammed and Prakash tried to come out by breaking the glass but it was too late.

A call was made to the fire department but by the time they reached, the car was charred. The eyewitnesses also tried to douse the blaze but failed.

Prakash's family members have been informed and his body has been sent for post mortem examination.
