A Customs official said they had received a tip-off about Musejibhana. “We were keeping a watch on as we had information about him trying to smuggle the gold,” the official said.
The Customs batch handed Musejibhana over to the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) for further investigation. Musejibhana told officials that the gold was for a Surat-based jeweller. He said he agreed to smuggle it because he was promised a commission of Rs10,000 and free air tickets. Musejibhana runs a footwear shop in Surat. He was later released on bail.
Advocate Ravi Hirani, who represented Musejibhana, said his client had tied the gold to his belt for safety purposes and is ready to pay duty.
In a second attempt to smuggle gold on the same day, the AIU of the Mumbai Customs arrested a 30-yr-old man who was trying to smuggle jewellery worth Rs5.5 lakh from Dubai. He too ws later released on bail.
