The India International Trade Fair saw a massive crowd on the first and last Sunday open to the general public. According to official estimates, more than 1,30,000 people visited the annual fair, the highest for one day so far this year.
Last year, close to 1.16 lakh people had visited
the fair on the last Sunday which was also the last day of the fair.
The trade fair, which started on November 14, was thrown open for the general public on November 19.
“This is the highest turnout we have seen so far in one day this time,” an India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) official said. The first day of the exhibition for general public had seen over 70,000 people, he added.
“There was just no space to walk in the pavilions. Since it was the last Sunday, it seems like everyone who had not been able to visit the fair till now came out,” said Manisha Chakravarty, a mother of two, who had come to the fair with the family.
Metro bore the brunt of the rush. According to DMRC officials, the total number of trade fair tickets sold from their counters was 97,175. A footfall of 99,500 was recorded at the Pragati Maidan Metro station 500 till 6 pm.
“All arrangements were in place for crowd management and everything went off smoothly,” said Prabhat Chandra Sharma, general manager, ITPO.
Over 6,000 exhibitors from India and abroad are participating in the fair. As many as 487 exhibitors from countries like Russia, South Africa, Canada and Pakistan are showcasing their products. Last time there were around 230 foreign exhibitors. The fair will conclude on November 27.
For a number of people who were near Pragati Maidan in the evening, negotiating the traffic was a nightmare. “I was stuck at the outer circle of Connaught Place for half an hour, in which we barely moved 100m. The trade fair threw traffic out of gear,” said Kshitij Khanna, a resident of Karol Bagh.
A traffic police officer said that special arrangements had been made to ensure smooth flow of traffic in and around Pragati Maidan. Though traffic moved slow, no major jams were witnessed in Pragati Maidan or central Delhi,” said the officer.
