It was Diwali and like most Delhiites, Vinay Sharma, a resident of south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, too wanted to shop. So, he decided to visit the nearby market over the weekend to stock up on gifts.
However, the chaos in the market’s parking area took its toll on his car. Sharma returned
from his shopping spree only to find his car’s side-view mirror dangling from its yoke.
“This is the third time my car has been damaged because of the horrible parking situation. The parking attendants are absolutely careless. There is no space for drivers to even open their car doors as the cars are so closely stuck together. Yet the attendants somehow want to squeeze in more cars. There must be an alternative parking arrangement for areas like these,” said Sharma.
The situation in the markets of other nearby areas such as Sheikh Sarai and Saket is no different. Those who frequent smaller markets often complain about the lack of parking space there which makes them park their vehicles far from these areas. The problem is rampant in smaller markets and commercial areas.
However, major commercial areas and malls have come to the rescue of the harried shoppers. Since these establishments have their own designated multi-level parking space, many prefer to use them to avoid the chaos in smaller markets.
“There is a permanent parking jam along the stretch of the main markets lining the Anupam PVR complex. Whenever someone decides to take his/her car out, it leads to total chaos on the road. So we sometimes park near the PVR complex or behind Select Citywalk mall because there is no space for even a bicycle to be parked there,” said Uday Jain, a resident of Masjid Moth.
But the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has attributed the rising space crunch to the exponentially increasing volume of cars, which have deemed all existing parking lots insufficient.
“We are aware of the problem and are looking for probable solutions. The volume of cars has increased by leaps and bounds over the past 10 years. It is a real challenge to meet the growing demand for parking space to accommodate these cars,” said Manish Gupta, commissioner, SDMC.
