The police have arrested SOPU leader Amandeep Singh Multani for allegedly assaulting 24-year-old Amarinder Singh, alias Captain, a resident of Patiala, in the Phase 3B2 market here on November 14.
Multani, 21, was produced in the court, which sent him to two-day police remand.

Multani, who has done his graduation from DAV College Chandigarh, during his preliminary interrogation, told the police that the attack was an outfall of student politics and the two were nursing a grudge against each other.

According to the police, Multani has been named as accused in six cases registered in various police stations in Chandigarh and in one of the cases he has been declared as proclaimed offender.

Multani is learnt to have told the police that he had picked up a fight with Amarinder Singh, a resident of Shutrana village in Patiala, in 2009 over some student election issue and since then both the parties had been nursing grudges against each other.

On November 14, when Aamrinder had stepped out of the court, Multani along with five other youths attacked him.

Amarinder had sustained head injuries, while his arm and leg got fractured in the attack. Amarinder is an agriculturist.

As per the police records, he was named as accused in a case registered in Phase 1 in November 2009 on the complaint of Multani, after they had a clash.

In his statement to the police, Amarinder had said, "I had come to the district courts for appearance in a case registered against me in 2009. When I came out of the court, Multani attacked me with a kirpan and later others attacked me with sticks."

The police had registered a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (offence is committed by any member of an unlawful assembly in prosecution of the common object of that assembly) of the IPC.
