The city police, probing the firing on hotelier BR Shetty, on Tuesday arrested two suspected sharpshooters from Jalandhar (Punjab), allegedly associated with gangster Chhota Rajan's gang, taking the number of arrests in the case to five.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of crime branch
officials reached Jalandhar and laid a trap for the accused, Dilip Upadhyay and Talvinder Singh. The duo was apprehended by the police team, an official said, adding that, "The accused were produced before a local court there, which granted them transit remand till November 30."
Based on the inputs, police teams had earlier travelled to Uttar Pradesh to nab the absconders, but the duo had managed to escape.
The accused would now be brought to Mumbai before November 30 to be produced before the court concerned here.
On October 3, Shetty, who runs a chain of hotels in Mumbai, Dubai and Malaysia, was shot at near Funcity in suburban Andheri. He received a bullet injury on his shoulder and is still recovering.
During the course of the investigation, the police had arrested property dealer Nityanand Nayak from Dharavi area, who spilled the beans about the other accused.
Subsequently, the police arrested Selvan Challappan Daniel, who revealed that the conspiracy was hatched by his cousin brother, Chhota Rajan aide Rohit Tangappan, who was in jail in another case.
Through court orders, investigators took the custody of Tangappan in the firing case.
The dispute is prima facie related to a big chunk of a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project in Dharavi, which a reputed builder was eyeing, the police said.
