According to Noida police, the bridge was built in 1984 and since then it has not undergone any major repair.
Delhi Police held a meeting with their Noida counterparts on Tuesday and decided that the bridge will be closed from December 15 to February 15. "There was proposal to completely close the bridge for traffic but to avoid chaos, we have suggested to keep at least one side open. However, heavy vehicles will not be allowed. One side of the road will be divided and used for to-and-fro commuting between Noida and Delhi," said MP Singh, Superintendent of Police (Traffic).
But the Delhi Police suggested that the carriageway should be kept one-way. "Our suggestion is, instead of allowing two-way traffic movement in half of the road, it will be better to allow one-way traffic only. When the carriageway from Noida to Delhi will be under repair, we will allow traffic flow from Delhi to Noida and when the other side will be repaired, then traffic will flow from Noida to Delhi. This will help us in managing traffic better," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg.
The PWD will carry out repair on expansion joints and rocker roller bearings of the bridge.
Singh explained that extra police force will be deployed to manage the traffic.Commuters can use the DND flyway to reach South Delhi and Noida gate for East Delhi as an alternative route.
