Around six months ago, Katju had praised Banerjee, saying she was devoted to the welfare of the people. The PCI chief, however, in his letter to Banerjee said, "I had praised you at one time. But of late, you seem to have become increasingly intolerant and whimsical."
Katju said he had gathered from his visits to Kolkata that ministers and bureaucrats were afraid to speak out their minds fearlessly before the CM.
Katju exhorted Banerjee to act like the Maharastha CM who had ordered the suspension of police officers behind the arrest of two girls who had posted on Facebook their objection to the shutdown of Mumbai following Bal Thackeray's death.
"I request you to do the same to the policemen who had ordered and implemented the arrest of Prof Mahapatra and Siladitya Choudhari... You should restore Damyanti Sen, the upright police officer…" Katju added.
Talking to reporters in Kolkata on Thursday, Banerjee denied having received any letter from Katju. "Some people with vested interests are trying to defame the government. All I can say is Raja Chale Bazaar Kutta Bhauke Hazar (when king walks in the market a thousand dogs bark) Our government is humanistic, not demonic."
