In a surprise move, the Congress has fielded Shweta Bhatt, wife of suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi from Ahmedabad’s Maninagar constituency. Sanjiv has accused Modi of telling senior police officers to “let Hindus vent their anger” against the minority community at a meeting on February 27, 2002.

“I will expose Modi, who has murdered democracy in Gujarat. I am confident that people of Maninagar will support me in my crusade against the dictatorship of Modi,” Shweta said.

Shweta’s name was doing the rounds as an Independent supported by NGOs and activists fighting for justice to the victims of the 2002 communal riots in the state.

SC on cash seizure
The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Election Commission to amend its directive to randomly search and seize in-transit cash in poll-bound Gujarat by making it clear that it will be applicable only to agents and workers of political parties carrying an amount above Rs. 50,000.
