Spelling disappointment for traders and shoppers, the restoration work in Connaught Place (CP) is set to miss yet another deadline — that of December 31. The New Year’s eve is expected to be a damp squib, especially for the traders of the area.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has
said that the surface work that includes levelling the roads and walkways, covering the pipelines and drains as well as removing the construction material, will be completed only by mid-January 2013. The crucial work on construction of subways in the Outer Circle and the work on the tunnel in the Middle Circle will continue for several more months.
“The contractor had promised us that most of the surface work will be done by January. We are also hoping that the work on radial roads, that are dug up presently, will be over by January 15. However, the work on the subways and the tunnel will still take many more months,” said a NDMC spokesperson.
CP traders, who have been at the receiving end of the renovation project, are unhappy with the quality of work and the housekeeping work being done by the civic agency.
"The pace of work has improved in the past few months but the agency will miss the deadline, yet again. As far as work on the subways is concerned, the contract should be cancelled and awarded to a new person as there have been several delays. Instead of carrying out the work in phases, the contractor took up too much work all at once and is now unable to handle it. As a result, so many roads and walkways continue to remain dug up, causing problems to the traders and shoppers," said Atul Bhargava, president of New Delhi Traders' Association.
Sources said that the speed of the work went down once again as workers, who usually migrate from other states, went back home during the festival period.
“Also, it was easy to get permission for the construction work before the Commonwealth Games 2010 but we are now facing a lot of difficulties in getting approvals from other agencies. This too has affected the pace of the work,” added the official.
