No surprises for this coming holiday season as Orlando and New York feature once again as Americans' most popular destinations according to a recent study.

A recent study carried out by Orbitz and American Express, published this weekend, shows that Orlando and New York are the most popular destinations for Christmas and New Year.

Christmas findings are based on hotel bookings for travel from December 23 to 27. Top 10 New Year's destinations are based on Orbitz.com hotel bookings for travel between December 30, 2012 and January 2, 2013.

Orlando is the top destination for US travelers during both periods. With an affordable average hotel rate of $144 a night and average airfare of $412 for Christmas week, Orlando benefits from a reduction in travel costs compared to last year. This Christmas, hotel fares are down by 7 percent and airfares are down by 4 percent.

The family-friendly destination is even more affordable during New Year's week with average hotel rates of $130 and average airfares of $291, down by 7 and 8 percent respectively.

New York comes in second position for both Christmas and New Year despite being more expensive. The average hotel cost for Christmas in the Big Apple is $354 per night, 10 percent more than in 2011. Average airfares are 5 percent up to a total of $406. Hotel prices in the city that never sleeps always go up over New Year's Eve.

This year, guests can expect to pay an average rate of $435 a night. However, airfares seem to be more affordable over New Year with an average of $371.
