The court of additional sessions judge JS Bhinder, on Tuesday convicted the husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law of burning alive a woman for dowry and sentenced them to 7-year imprisonment under Section 304-B (dowry death) of the IPC.
The victim Paramjit Kaur of Begowal in Kapurthala was married to Sukhwinder Singh of Jalalpur village in Tanda. Paramjeet's father, Gurcharan Singh,  had complained to the police that her daughter was being harassed for dowry. He added that Paramjit had been thrown out of their house by her in-laws. On March 27, 2011, he had dropped her back with her in-laws and the very next day he was informed that his daughter had been set ablaze, Gurcharan had stated. He said he found Paramjit struggling for life in Tanda civil hospital, and she died on her way to the DMCH Ludhiana.

He claimed that before her death, Paramjit had told him that she had been set on fire by her husband and in-laws. Taking circumstantial evidence in to account, the court took it as a dowry death and convicted deceased's husband and his parents. A fine of Rs. 20,000 has also been slapped on each of them.

Life term to two for murder
The same court also pronounced life sentence on two for the murder of a watchman in Bassi Kikran village in June 2011. Body of one Chhotu was found lying in the maize fields. on the complaint of the brick kiln owner at whose premises Chhotu worked, Sadar police had registered a case under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC against co workers Ladda Masih and Soni Masih. It emerged that Soni suspected Chhotu of having illicit relation with his wife. The court imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000 each in default of which they would have to undergo imprisonment of another two years.
